Roethlisberger will regret this for a long time

Ben Roethlisberger is a smart guy. He went straight from the MAC to starting 13 games as a Steelers rookie, and he didn’t suffer the usual lumps of a first-year quarterback. In fact, he set a record for the best quarterback rating from a rookie (98.1). When the Steelers beat the Seahawks four months ago, Roethlisberger capped his second season in the league with his first Super Bowl. He’s the youngest quarterback to win the big game. It takes some intelligence to do that, right? That’s what makes Roethlisberger’s motorcycle accident Monday morning utterly senseless. This isn’t knucklehead Kellen Winslow out for a joyride. This is a guy who should know better than to ride without a helmet as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting. In fact, coach Bill Cowher used Winslow’s incident to remind Big Ben that helmets are a good idea to protect the noggin of a franchise quarterback. Terry Bradshaw, the franchise’s quarterback back in his day, went a step farther and told Ben to save the riding for after football. Many professional athletes have the mindset that they’re indestructible. It’s the same thinking that leads some athletes to have unprotected sex with strangers or take performance-enhancing drugs while ignoring the risks. They’re big, tough guys, and nothing can hurt them. Not AIDS, not cancer and certainly not motorcycle accidents. More : sportingnews.com |
