India’s foreign minister, who was seriously injured when a truck slammed into his car in eastern India, is now stable, news reports said Sunday. Earlier Sunday, Pranab Mukherjee was flown to the capital in an air force plane, where he was met by the prime minister and rushed to an army hospital, said M.K. Mukherjee, one of the injured official’s aides. A medical bulletin from the hospital said that the 72-year-old minister was “cheerful and stable,” and would be kept under observation for another 48 hours, the Press Trust of India reported. “I am well but doctors have advised me 48-hours rest. I hope to be back to work after that period,” the minister, a longtime stalwart of India’s ruling Congress Party said, PTI reported. The accident took place late Saturday as Mukherjee, 72, was traveling back from his parliamentary constituency north of Calcutta, eastern India’s main city, said Raj Kanojia, a senior police official in the state of West Bengal, where the crash occurred. The truck driver apparently lost control when a tire burst as Mukherjee’s convoy was driving past in the opposite lane, Kanojia said. More : abcnews.go.com |
