A seventh person died yesterday from injuries caused by an out-of-control van that struck a crowd of pedestrians in Herald Square the night before. The driver of the van was released yesterday without charges. The driver, Sidney Weinstein, 76, was interviewed by investigators after the crash, which took place around 5 p.m. Thursday. But he was allowed to go home around 2 a.m. yesterday after being treated at a hospital for minor injuries, the police said. Detectives said that their investigation had not yielded any evidence of a criminal act in one of New York City’s deadliest pedestrian accidents in years. ”He’s free to go,” one official said. But the officials said they reserved to the right to charge Mr. Weinstein at a later date and were doing everything they could to re-examine his role in the incident. The police said Mr. Weinstein told detectives that the van’s accelerator stuck moments before he struck a crowd of pedestrians in the crosswalk. More : query.nytimes.com |
