Motorcycle accidents - Pay attention

The first robin of spring showed up quite awhile ago, trees are sprouting leaves and even some flowers are emerging from hibernation. As further proof that spring has arrived, the motorcycles are showing up on the streets in larger numbers. And that’s a problem. For some reason, car drivers don’t seem to see motorcycles in their vicinity as well as they see other cars. Between 2002 and 2006, the Kansas Department of Transportation recorded a total of 508 accidents involving motorcycles in March and April of those years, compared with only 153 in January and February. There are a number of factors in the spring accident increase. Motorists have forgotten during the winter to be alert to motorcyclists. Motorcyclists’ riding skills have become rusty during the winter. Sand and debris on the streets causes traction problems for motorcycles. And injuries and death occur more frequently for motorcyclists in Kansas that necessary because Kansas doesn’t require riders to wear helmets. That really leaves us only one option for reducing motorcycle accidents and injuries. Both motorcyclists and car drivers need to stay alert to their surroundings. Source : cjonline.com |
