On Disbarring Clinton Lawyers held to high standards Whether William Clinton should be disbarred as an attorney should remind all of us, including lawyers, of the high standards imposed on every lawyer each day. The judiciary in each state grants the license to be admitted to practice law and also retains the power to disbar any lawyer who fails to live up to the standards imposed. Those standards include not just integrity but good moral character. The court must rely on its lawyers in order to conduct the pursuit of justice. If the court cannot rely on its lawyers, the whole system destructs in due course and the public loses its confidence in a basic part of the government. The judiciary cannot tolerate dishonest breaches of oath. In the state of New York, lawyers are disbarred almost each day and their names are published in the New York Law Journal. If a lawyer is convicted of a felony, the disbarment is automatic with the filing of the certification of the conviction.
